Will be towing a 24' caravan (approx.2.9 ton) from Dubbo to try to get to Newcastle and up the Pacific Highway to Gold Coast to try to avoid the problem/flood road near Goondiwindi/Warrick on the Newell Highway. Am trying to also miss the ranges & windy roads. Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Con

Check your road maps or GPS, but there is a road from Maitland to Raymond Terrace (Pacific Highway north of Hexham) , you miss the congestion between Maitland and Hexham, across the Hunter River flats. It is shorter and quicker.

Before you torture yourself on the Pacific Highway make sure you really don't have any other options from Goondi.

Con,

Best way is to go to Newcastle via the Golden Highway

From Dubbo, go to Dunedoo, Merriwa, Denman, Maitland to Hexham then up the Pacific Highway

Have a look at Dubbo to Hexham via Golden Highway

Its a good run with not a lot of traffic, some small hills and not to windy and there are even some nice overnighter spots.

Cheers,

Cruiser

From Denman, instead of going turning right to continue the Golden Highway via Jerry's Plains, and the open cuts, you can go straight on to Muswellbrook (approx 25 k's) and you're on the New England Highway to Maitland, where you will pass the big power stations.

I always go this way when towing the caravan, otherwise I go through Jerry's plains, where you will see the big open cut mines, and the beautifully manicured properties of the big horse studs.

The Golden Highwy is a great drive which you should enjoy.

The Newel hwy road is open and fine all the way to gundawindi then go through toowoomba across that way will save you hours of slow traffic up the coast road.
about 4 hours across to Newcastle and the same to Gundy from Dubbo.

Just make a phone call to Millmerran before you go, came through today and about 150mm of water across the road at Condamine creek, road was open with caution and down to 1 lane. Still the way to go. the Gap was closed for an hour today not sure why.
